Ever since, in 2016, Amber Heard accused her then-husband, Johnny Depp, of domestic violence, in the midst of a messy divorce, the conflict between the two actors has only grown. Both parties have accused each other of abuse, and everything came to a head when Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation. As everyone knows, she counter-sued, and their trial was televised.

Now, over a month after a verdict was reached, the legal battle seems to continue. Here's what we can expect.

Reviewing The Verdict

The verdict of the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial has caused mixed reactions. Lots of people were happy that Johnny Depp's name was being cleared, but others were concerned about the precedent that the outcome of this trial would set for women coming forward with their stories of domestic violence. Both are valid points, and everyone is entitled to their opinion, so let's review the facts and let everyone reading them come to their own conclusion. On June 1st, after a month of a very public trial, the jury reached a verdict that ordered Amber Heard to pay her ex-husband $10.35 million after being found guilty of defaming him in an op-ed piece she wrote in 2018, which implied that he was a domestic abuser. In addition, Johnny Depp was required to pay her $2 million after a statement from his lawyer was found to be defamatory. Despite that, the verdict was a clear win for Depp and his team.
"Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people, who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed," the actor wrote in a statement. "And six years (after Heard's original domestic violence claim), the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled." He added that "From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that."
They Will Both Be Filing Appeals

Ever since the verdict was made public, there has been talk about Amber Heard filing an appeal, and her legal team has tried to have the verdict thrown out on more than one occasion. Now, it's official: she will appeal the order that requires her to pay Johnny Depp $10 million in damages. "We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment," said a spokesperson for Amber Heard. "We are therefore appealing the verdict."

Depp's team, for their part, has prepared their own response, although they don't seem too worried about this turn of events. "The verdict speaks for itself, and Mr. Depp believes that this is a time for both parties to move on with their lives and heal," a source shared. "But if Ms. Heard is determined to pursue further litigation by appealing the verdict, Mr. Depp is filing a concurrent appeal to ensure that the full record and all relevant legal issues are considered by the Court of Appeal."
